Krampus devils

Krampus 5th December

The word Krampus originates from the Old High German word for claw (Krampen). This ancient festival which survives from pre-Christian times takes place on the night of the 5th of December.

St. Nicholas, the special children's saint, is honoured throughout Austria. It is said that God rewarded Nicholas' generosity by allowing him to return to earth each year to bring gifts to all the good children. St. Nicholas comes on this day, a special holiday before Christmas. In Maria Alm the evening starts with St Nicholas handing out gifts to the good children, but look out, if you have been naughty! The next to arrive in a blaze of flames and flares are the Krampus, the jangling of their cow bells is terrifying they walk in and around the crowd whipping any one they can get their hands on. A great excuse to warm up around the bonfire with a drink and experience this bizarre tradition.
